GATE Preparation Tips

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering i.e. it’s only an aptitude test. So here is the good news for those who have studied four year course to learn engineering rather than just clearing exams. Though sensible learned guys have advantage over crammers, we are sure anybody can prepare well and be competent by second Sunday of February. If you don’t believe this, let us tell you something. Here in our team at theexamnews, there is a guy who never topped in any of the semesters but he had good understanding of his favorite subjects. In fact, he got himself few of the back logs. But when GATE result was announced, he got AIR 40 while the toppers and other students of his class either got < 90-95%ile or didn’t qualify. And he is not the only one to do that, we have seen some more people like him.
The whole idea of telling this story is that–
1.     If you can understand engineering subjects, you will do well.
2.     Unlike the university exams, GATE Question paper is numerical/conceptual based (only ~15% questions are theory based). So you don’t have to cram any theory and so called toppers do not have advantage.
3.     GATE Question paper is not very difficult but a balanced one with numerical/conceptual based questions from all subjects of your course. The intent of GATE is to check your understanding of engineering.
Now let us present you the preparation tips.
1.     Get GATE syllabus and your degree syllabus. Now prepare a table as shown below

Subjects from GATE syllabus
Semester
(in which GATE topics are covered)
Digital Logic
Semester 3
Computer Architecture
Semester 5

2.     Now you know what part of GATE syllabus can be prepared without spending extra time (i.e. with the semester subjects). Just focus more on these subjects.
3.     We know some of you would be wondering what to do with the semester subjects that have already passed. Don’t worry at all. You already have a list of these subjects. Find out which subjects needs re-study and make a schedule to study these subjects on Sundays.
4.     If the time is more, prepare difficult subjects first otherwise prepare easy subjects first.
5.     Study quality books. We know that in every local area, there exists books to clear semester exams but now is the time to stop doing that. We also suggest spending less or no time on GATE coaching class material. No hard feeling for them but these are no match for the good books. Also if you have build your concepts from text/reference books, you can any day refer to these books. Any day means even after your BTech/MTech/PhD as these will always be with you just like a good old friend.
6.     We don’t ask you to prepare long notes but write down all formulae and important concepts at one place.
7.     Arrange previous years GATE papers.
o    Solve all these papers and find your good & bad areas.
o    Also also analyze paper to find out how much weightage is given to a topic in GATE paper.

We will soon come up with the list of quality books to help you all.
