How to calculate percentile?

GATE, CAT and many other tests use percentile scores to measure a candidate’s performance. Please note that percentile is different from percentage.

Percentile is a relative term and tells where you stand in a group of people. Your percentile score indicates the percentage of test takers who scores less than you. For example, if you have 99.26 percentile, it means 99.26% candidates scored less than you. Interesting point to note is that if you are topper in a class of 100, your percentile would be 99 and not 100 (as it tells the number of candidates behind you).

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering i.e. it’s only an aptitude test. So here is the good news for those who have studied four year course to learn engineering rather than just clearing exams. Though sensible learned guys have advantage over crammers, we are sure anybody can prepare well and be competent by second Sunday of February. If you don’t believe this, let us tell you something. Here in our team at theexamnews, there is a guy who never topped in any of the semesters but he had good understanding of his favorite subjects. In fact, he got himself few of the back logs. But when GATE result was announced, he got AIR 40 while the toppers and other students of his class either got < 90-95%ile or didn’t qualify. And he is not the only one to do that, we have seen some more people like him.
