How to calculate percentile?

How to calculate percentile?
GATE, CAT and many other tests use percentile scores to measure a candidate’s performance. Please note that percentile is different from percentage.
Percentile is a relative term and tells where you stand in a group of people. Your percentile score indicates the percentage of test takers who scores less than you. For example, if you have 99.26 percentile, it means 99.26% candidates scored less than you. Interesting point to note is that if you are topper in a class of 100, your percentile would be 99 and not 100 (as it tells the number of candidates behind you).
Steps to calculate percentile:

How many appeared for GATE 2011 and what's the qualifying score?

The number of students appearing for various GATE paper differ very much. Following table gives the approximate number of candidates appearing for some of the papers. The table also shows the qualifying score (minimum marks to be scored).

GATE Preparation Tips

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering i.e. it’s only an aptitude test. So here is the good news for those who have studied four year course to learn engineering rather than just clearing exams. Though sensible learned guys have advantage over crammers, we are sure anybody can prepare well and be competent by second Sunday of February. If you don’t believe this, let us tell you something. Here in our team at theexamnews, there is a guy who never topped in any of the semesters but he had good understanding of his favorite subjects. In fact, he got himself few of the back logs. But when GATE result was announced, he got AIR 40 while the toppers and other students of his class either got < 90-95%ile or didn’t qualify. And he is not the only one to do that, we have seen some more people like him.
The whole idea of telling this story is that–

GATE 2011 Pattern and Structure

GATE 2011 Pattern and Structure
1.     There was a single paper of three hours duration.
2.     The paper consists of 65 questions - 30 one marks and 35 two marks questions. An aptitude section comprising of 5 one mark and 5 two mark questions was also there. There were few questions on engineering mathematics.
3.     The paper carries total 100 marks.

Eligibility for GATE

Eligibility for GATE
The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE
1.     Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
2.     Master degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

Why GATE

Why GATE?
1.     PSUs like IOC and Govt. organizations like BARC etc give preference to the GATE score.
2.     GATE qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.
3.     If you have really performed well in GATE and in your undergrad course, you stand a chance to directly do PhD at these prestigious institutions.

About GATE

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an all-India examination. It is administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE committee on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-GATE, Department of Education, MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources Development), Government of India. The GATE committee comprises of faculty from IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore and seven IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).
